Treatment Creative Option
Make a mini mag that
discusses the following:
- Give an overview of
your idea/concept.
· Discuss the kind of products being produced.
The
product I am producing is a 12-paged magazine about health and fitness.
· Discuss the physical size of your magazine – A4, A5?
A4
· The number of pages being produced, an exact detailing
of the stories to be researched and written material to be produced.
12
pages, 3 pages are
adverts.
· The style of the magazine – its relationship to other
magazines on the market.
The
style of this magazine is not in relationship to other magazines.
- A brief discussion of your audience
and Explain why you have taken these decisions:
- Define them in terms of their age, gender, tribe and
socioeconomic status. What are the behaviours and consumption habits of
your target audience? How will this affect the content of your magazine?
My
target audience will be ages 16-24, socioeconomic of C/D, and the tribe of
sport junkies, and 100% male. My audience will mostly have hobbies related to
the content of the magazine, which in this case, will be working out, having an
interest in fitness, and trying to look good.
- How will you accommodate their needs within the content and
aesthetics of your end product? What problems do this pose for your
project and how are you going to overcome them?
I
will try and accommodate their needs by seeing what other magazines they are interested
in. I think they will mostly be interested in the other popular fitness
magazines, so I will base mine off this. This could include writing stories
based off their interests, and using the colour schemes suited to them.
- A detailed discussion
of the visual aesthetics you
want to achieve: this discussion. Discuss:
· Language use: intro style, narrative voice, tone,
paragraph length, extended or limited language use:
· Key fonts to be used and connotation:
· Format:
· Text to image ratio: Image heavy on most articles
· Photography and lighting use plus a detailed
discussion of image connotations:
· Colour: Red, White, Blue
· Layout: 3 columns
- A detailed discussion of the distribution
techniques you will use.
- Where will your magazine be distributed? Explain why you have
taken these decisions.

Branding
Objectives
|
|
What is the genre of your magazine? What are you
informing your audience about?
How will it branded?
What are the connotations of your branding
decisions?
What are the connotations of the magazine’s name?
|
The genre of my magazine is going to be health and
fitness, I will be informing my audience of information about how to better
their lives through fitness, this will include diet and workout advice. My
front cover will have the name of my magazine ‘FIT’ however the ‘I’ will be
replaced by a dumbbell; this will give connotations of fitness. The
connotation of my magazine name is pretty obvious, it’s called FIT and it is
about fitness, therefore it is obvious what the magazine is based on.
|
Audience
communication objectives
|
|
Who is your audience?
Identify: tribe, socioeconomics, age, gender
split.
|
My audience will be between the ages of 16-24 and
with the socio economic class of C/D. The gender split will be 100% male;
this makes it easier when finding information on articles such as different
exercises, as I only have to cater for one gender. The tribe I will be aiming
to target is ‘Sport Junkies’; this is the tribe, which perfectly suited my
magazine, as the magazine is fitness related.
|
Your unique selling point
|
My unique selling point would be that my magazine
gives the audience real, researched, advice and information about the most
popular talking points in the health and fitness industry, which in this
magazine will be ‘Diet, Exercise, and Performance enhancing Drugs’. It will
also be targeted towards the a younger age group which is a way how it
differs to its competitor magazines like men’s health, and men’s fitness, as
these magazine are usually targeting males between the ages of 25-40.
|
Overview
|
|
Description of front cover and contents
page
Content.
Imagery to be deployed: metaphorical, ideal,
window to the future self
|
My front cover will have my model on it in a tight
fitted tshirt holding a barbell in both hands, this will hopefully represent
that the magazine is fitness based. Also my masthead of the magazine name
‘FIT’ will also represent the genre of the magazine. Another front cover idea
I have come up with is having both a male and a female on the front of my
magazine as it is mixed gender (70% male, 30% female). This is because having
just a male on the front of a magazine may attract women as they are
interested as men; however this would be as a secondary audience. I have 30%
of my primary audience as female so they would hopefully realise it has some
female content in because there is a female on the front. I will also try to
ensure that both my male, and female models are relatively healthy and good
looking, this will hopefully make the audience read my magazine as they see
people on the front that they aspire to look like. The imagery that I will
use on the front will also link to my sell lines.

Double Page 1
Title, content and article type
|
My first double page spread is one based off good
and bad diets. This DPS will consist of 3 good diets and 3 bad diets, and all
the nutritional information about how to follow these diets, and the best
sorts of diets dependant on your lifestyle. My title will have ‘Eat Clean,
get Lean’ in white and blue text, this text will most probably be edited, as
I cannot find any fonts that suit this sort of article type. It would most
likely be based off a sans serif font, as they are a lot cleaner and more
informal than serif fonts.
|
Double Page 2
Title, content and article type
|
My second double page spread ‘5 exercises to get a
v shaped body’ will consist of only knowledgeable information. This is
information that the readers will need to know before and during performing
these exercises. I will also talk about the positive effects of using these
exercises in your daily workout routines. In this article I will ensure that
the layout is different to all other layouts in my other articles, this means
I will have a title of the exercise, then underneath I will have a certain
amount of images depending on how many it takes to describe the full range of
motion.
|
Double page 3
Title, content and article type
|
My third double page spread ‘The truth about
performance enhancing drugs’ is an article based off peoples pre conceptions
(I will get these responses from making questionnaires and giving them to my
peers, and asking them about their opinions on PEDS), and the real truth
about what can happen when you abuse steroids, and other PEDS. It will also
include positive aspects of PEDS that I have experienced in first person. The
layout of this double page spread will be similar to the diet article. The
spacing between images and text will be very small as there will be an image
to either the left, or the right of the certain PED I am talking about.
|
Distribution
objectives
|
|
Free to view, supplement, retail? Circulation: how
many and why this number?
Outlets and rationale:
Pricing: premium, mid or free to view? Why?
Print quality: Discuss print finishing, magazine
size, paper quality. Number of pages.
Advertising to content ratio
|
The distribution strategy I am going to use is a
free supplement, the reason for this is mainly because the aim of this
magazine is to get more people to get into fitness and to stay healthy,
therefore, by doing a free fitness magazine, this will hopefully make the
readers of the northern echo to open their eyes and see the bigger picture
about fitness.
I am going to do a 12 page A4 magazine supplement;
the reason for this is because the images and information that is inside my
magazine will be way too long and big for an A5 leaflet. I am also going to
finish my paper with a normal quality like other fitness magazine
competitors; this is mainly due to the fact that if I were to use very high
quality paper, I would be making even more of a loss due to the fact that the
magazine is free.
I will also only have 3 pages of adverts; this
will give me a lot more space to put in more content like extra information
on top of the double page spreads.

Story control Objectives
|
‘Get an X-shaped body with these 5 basic
exercises’
The main focus of this first article is to inform
the readers about different types of exercises to target different parts of
your body and to plan workouts around these exercises. The approximate word
count for this article will be around 400-500 words; this is because I do not
want it being too long, or too short. The text to image ratio on this article
will be mainly image heavy; this is because I will have pictures explaining
the exercises and how to execute them properly. I will also talk about the
importance of executing these exercises properly, and the injuries they could
lead to if they are done wrong. Also my target audience are of a younger age
therefore they will prefer more images rather than a lot of boring text.
‘The truth about PEDs’
The truth about performance enhancing drugs will
be my second article. This article is also going to be an informative article
as I will be explaining to my reader’s different types of PEDs, their
positive and negative effects, and real life stories about people who have
taken these so called ‘drugs’. I will retrieve the stories by interviewing
people or asking people questions about their experiences whilst taking
these. I will also do a survey asking people about these drugs and use the
statistics I receive and put them in little text boxes scattered around the
DPS.
‘Eat Clean Get Lean’
This is my final DPS, I have already made this
layout in my mock up and I will not change the look of it, I may however
change the actual text and language I used on the layout. Apart from that,
the colours etc. will stay the same. This layout will be mainly around
correct diets, and false diets that many people think are healthy and will
work, when really, they are just dangerous.
|
Image content objectives
|
As my magazine is 70% male, 30% female, I am going
to have to use a female model for some of photos, this is to attract women to
my magazine as if all the images were male based, females would tend to avoid
it.
The photo shoot I am going to plan for my first
DPS ‘Get an X-shaped body with these 5 basic exercises’, will be a very
active photo shoot as there will be lots of props, and moving around.
I will get my models to use the equipment that
would usually be in a gym (dumbbells and barbells) to perform the selected
exercises that I will have featured in this article. I am also going to use a
lot of shadowing on my models bodies to make them look a lot better than they
are, I will do some research into fitness photo shoots and see how different
sorts of lighting are used and what effects they give off.
For my second article, the photo shoots will be a
little different, there will be a lot more text in this article as images
would be hard to plan for or to take. I will take some photos of the legal
performance enhancing drugs I can get my hands on, however, the illegal ones
are the ones which I will be talking about most and I will be unable to take
photos of these.
My final article is about food, therefore I will
get all the healthiest foods I can find, and use those in my photo shoot.
These foods will include; blueberries, bananas, avocado, nuts, berries, etc.
I have already made this DPS in my mock up, however, the only thing I will be
changing on it are the images, therefore I will do another photo shoot and
replace the images.
|
Language Control Objectives
|
The language I am going to use in my first article
will be very different to the language I use in all the others. I will ensure
that the first articles language will be very informative, and guiding. This
is because it is a DPS about telling people how to do certain exercises
therefore it will have to be very instructional. The narrative voice will be
certainly 2nd, and 3rd person. This is because I will
be using 2nd person to guide the readers through the exercises,
and 3rd person because I will be talking directly to them.
My second article ‘The truth about PEDs’ will be
written in both 1st, and 3rd person. This is because I
will be giving both my opinion, and other people opinions in the topic. The
language I use may be a little bit of taboo language however I will keep it
to a minimum, as I do not want my secondary audience getting offended.
I have already written this article as I created
this DPS as my mock up, however I may look through it again and change some
of the language I used as it was only a mock up and I got a little bit of
feedback on it.
|
Colour control objectives
|
The colours I will use on all my DPS’s will change
throughout. On my first DPS, ‘Get an
X-shaped body with these 5 basic exercises’, the colours will be very
different to those used on my ‘Eat Clean, Get Lean’ layout, this is down to
the fact that the same of my the eat clean magazine shows freshness so I used
light blues, and whites. However, as my first DPS is informative I want it
all to stand out, therefore I will use bright reds, whites, and blacks, by
using these colours I am also using the ‘rule of three’, which should have a
good effect on my DPS. I will use this exact same colours scheme on my DPS
about performance enhancing drugs; this is because this is an article about
the dangers of abusing these drugs. Therefore, by using colours that will
stand out, I should be able to get my point across easier, and people will
treat the article more serious.
|
Typography objectives
|
The fonts which I will use for all of my double
page spreads will be Sans Serif, this is because the main focus of my
magazine is sport and fitness, and usually people will see this as an
informal topic, therefore, using sans serif fonts fits this. Some of the
fonts I will use are; Kenzo, Code, Fine Sans, Fine Style, Derivia, and Big
Noodle Titling. All of these fonts will be used somewhere in my DPS and Front
cover.
|
Layout objectives
|
In my first DPS ‘Get an X-shaped body with these 5 basic exercises’, I will have
2 short wide columns on the left hand side, and 3 columns on the right hand
side. I will then have a breakout box going along the bottom of the right
hand page; this will be there because I will not have enough text to fill the
page with columns. I will use 1 column per exercise; this will give the page
a bit of space. The image will be at the top of the column, and then the
description will be below the image. In this breakout box, I will have an
example of a full body workout using all of these exercises with the correct
intensity, and resting time, etc.
My second DPS; ‘The Truth about PEDS’, the layout
will be a little bit scattered, this is because I will have the text in
random columns, and then wherever the text about that performance enhancing
drug finishes, I will insert a picture of that drug if available. I will also
have a breakout box down the right hand side of my layout, this will consist
of links where to buy the legal performance enhancing drugs to buy on the
internet.
My third double page spread; Eat Clean, Get Lean,
has already been made. However, I will change around the layout, as I will be
retaking some pictures of the food due to the poor quality of the pictures
that I took when doing my mock up. The layout consisted of 3 columns per page,
and a large masthead taking up half of the left hand page.
